Mechanical Engineer, Robotics

ABOUT CLIENT

Our client is a leading research company specializing in technology innovation

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsible for designing and developing mechanical assemblies for a humanoid body, including joints, actuators, sensor mounts, and structural members
Create detailed 3D part drawings and assembly models using CAD tools such as Solidworks across various materials including plastics, metals, and composites
Conduct hands-on testing such as load testing, fatigue cycling, thermal soak, and kinematic validation for body segments
Participate in DFM reviews with contract manufacturers and understand tooling constraints, cycle times, and failure modes during production
Develop and maintain production drawings with GD&T and inspection callouts for handoff to manufacturing partners and quality assurance
Set up and instrument test stands, wire sensors, and collect data to analyze failure modes and refine design iterations
Select appropriate materials and joining methods for plastics, metals, and composites based on loading conditions and production requirements
Collaborate with firmware and electrical teams to integrate actuators, sensors, and PCBs into mechanical assemblies, ensuring proper cable routing, connector access, and serviceability
Contribute to open-source hardware and design efforts, including providing build guides, BOM documentation, assembly instructions, and CAD releases for the broader robotics community.

JOB REQUIREMENT

3 or more years of experience in mechanical design for complex electromechanical products
Proficiency in Solidworks for detailed part modeling, assembly, surfacing, and drawings
Proven expertise in sheet metal fabrication and both traditional and additive manufacturing
Familiarity with GD&T and creating 2D engineering drawings for manufacturing and QA
Ability to conduct FEA simulations (static, dynamic, thermal) and interpret results for design decisions
Comfortable working within cost and weight constraints while maintaining reliability
Demonstrated experience in material and actuator selection, fasteners, and mechanisms
Proficiency in rapid prototyping methods and supporting design decisions throughout the product lifecycle
Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with suppliers, engineers, and leadership
Experience with bipedal or humanoid robot hardware, legged locomotion platforms, or high DOF manipulators
Participation in robotics competitions
Familiarity with parallel mechanisms and non-standard joint configurations
Knowledge of plastics engineering, including material selection and mechanical property optimization
Scripting or automation experience in Python for CAD workflows and data analysis
Experience with deploying control systems to hardware
Familiarity with sim-to-real workflows and understanding the impact of hardware decisions on training and transfer of locomotion policies
Previous involvement in robotics or wearable systems emphasizing mechanical tolerances and ergonomics

WHAT'S ON OFFER

Join a renowned research team to work on impactful projects
Take ownership of the core training code infrastructure used by the team
Engage with real models, data, and scale, rather than small-scale problems
Contribute to bridging the gap between research velocity and engineering quality
Enjoy a flexible work environment with a culture that values depth, clarity, and curiosity

Own products and features from beginning to end - originate ideas, understand the strategy and goals behind them, ship to production with real users, iterate on feedback, and stay responsible for their ongoing success. Scope features and projects, including writing handover / technical design documents (as built) - the person who built a feature is the best person to document it. Improve application performance - ship technical improvements that make the product faster, more stable, and ready to scale. Sweat the UI and interaction details - crafting a clean, pleasant experience is a daily habit, not an afterthought. Improve how we work, not just what we build: refine development processes, drive improvements in code quality and engineering best practices - and hold a zero-bug standard: bugs get fixed promptly, not stockpiled in a backlog. Work closely with designers to craft thoughtful UX/UI - ship and own the basic experience using the design system, deciding when to bring in design to polish - and collaborate with the Customer Success team to learn how the product is actually being used. Bring a tester's mindset - testing is part of building, not someone else's job. You own the quality of what you ship and stand behind it.
