JOB DESCRIPTION

Act as the main expert on bioinformatics for engineering teams developing cloud-native bioinformatics software.
Work with software architects to convert scientific workflows into scalable distributed computing architectures.
Help engineers understand the computational characteristics, assumptions, and limitations of existing bioinformatics tools.
Confirm that modernized applications maintain scientific correctness and produce reproducible results.
Establish biological data models, metadata standards, controlled vocabularies, and best practices for data harmonization.
Assist engineering teams in developing scalable approaches for processing large genomic and multi-omics datasets.
Evaluate open-source bioinformatics software and identify opportunities for cloud-native modernization.
Collaborate with distributed computing specialists to determine how algorithms can be parallelized using large-scale execution frameworks.
Create validation datasets, benchmarking methodologies, and acceptance criteria for transformed applications.
Review engineering designs to ensure biological accuracy and scientific integrity.
Collaborate with AI engineering teams on using AI-assisted software transformation while ensuring scientific correctness.
Stay up to date with advances in bioinformatics, computational biology, distributed computing, and cloud-based scientific software.

JOB REQUIREMENT

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics, Computer Science, or related field. A PhD is preferred.
Thorough knowledge of genomics, molecular biology, and modern bioinformatics algorithms.
Proficiency in utilizing popular bioinformatics tools such as PLINK, Regenie, BWA, SAMtools, GATK, BCFtools, Nextflow, or similar.
Experience in creating or assessing bioinformatics workflows for large-scale genomic or multi-omics datasets.
Solid understanding of biological data formats including FASTQ, BAM/CRAM, VCF, GTF/GFF, AnnData, or equivalent.
Experience in validating scientific software and ensuring reproducibility.
Proficient in programming with Python and/or R.
Ability to effectively communicate complex biological concepts to non-domain expert software engineers.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Knowledge of distributed computing frameworks such as Apache Spark.
Experience in deploying bioinformatics software to cloud platforms.
Familiarity with scalable workflow execution systems.
Experience in multi-omics analysis.
Contribution to open-source bioinformatics software.
Collaboration with software engineering teams in building production systems.
Experience with AI-assisted software development.
Familiarity with variant calling and processing of RNAseq proteomics.
Act as the authoritative scientific reviewer for architecture and implementation decisions impacting bioinformatics workflows.
Set standards for biological data quality, metadata consistency, and reproducibility.
Develop validation strategies to ensure transformed software maintains functional equivalence with the original applications.
Collaborate with product managers and software architects to prioritize scientific capabilities and roadmap decisions.
